North Dakota’s Medical Marijuana Program is Evolving

Legislative Updates Go Into Effect August 1, 2025

What’s Changing?

Starting August 1, important updates to North Dakota’s Medical Marijuana Program will take effect. These changes are designed to expand access, improve patient experiences, and streamline the program statewide.

Edibles Approved for Production

Starting August 1, the state will allow the production and sale of low-dose edible cannabis products in the form of soft lozenges (gummies) or hard lozenges. Products are restricted to 5mg THC per serving and 50 mg THC per container. While these products fall under the 6000mg extract allotment, a 310mg per day purchase limit has also been instituted. These new options are smoke-free and may offer patients a more discreet and simple way to relieve symptoms. Products are expected to begin appearing on dispensary shelves in late August or in early September.

Cards Valid for Two Years

Patients will now receive a two-year medical marijuana card instead of having to renew annually or semiannually. This change cuts down on renewal applications and fees, making it easier for patients with chronic conditions to stay enrolled without unnecessary disruptions.

Telehealth Now Permitted

Beginning August 1, individuals will receive the opportunity to establish health care provider relationships and receive their first-time medical marijuana certification via Telehealth. This adjustment to the program makes access more practical, especially those with limited mobility or those living in rural areas.

60-Day Non-Resident Cards

Out-of-state medical marijuana patients can now apply for a 60-day temporary medical card while visiting North Dakota. This has the potential to allow for continuity of care without interrupting treatment while traveling or completing seasonal work. Application times may vary and individuals are encouraged to plan accordingly for minimal interruptions.
